Director of Bereavement Programs

About the Opportunity

Our client, a hospital in the Bronx, is seeking a compassionate and strategic clinical leader to oversee and expand their comprehensive bereavement services. This role is responsible for guiding a multidisciplinary team, developing innovative programming, and ensuring the highest standards of care and support for grieving individuals and families.

The annual base salary range is $110,000to $150,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and evaluation of grief support initiatives, including specialized programs for children, teens, and adults
  • Supervise a team of licensed clinicians and bereavement coordinators, providing mentorship, performance evaluations, and professional development
  • Design and deliver educational workshops and training sessions for professionals in healthcare, education, and community services
  • Facilitate and oversee support groups tailored to various types of loss, such as spousal, parental, sibling, and child bereavement
  • Collaborate with hospice teams to identify and support families at risk for complicated grief, including conducting home visits when necessary
  • Develop and manage the department’s annual budget, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and fiscal responsibility
  • Maintain accurate records and databases for all bereavement services, including participant demographics and program engagement
  • Partner with senior leadership to align bereavement services with the organization’s strategic vision and community outreach efforts
  • Coordinate seasonal and ongoing programs such as youth grief camps, memorial services, and therapeutic group sessions
  • Promote the visibility of bereavement services through community engagement, partnerships with schools and faith-based organizations, and public presentations
  • Ensure compliance with clinical, ethical, and regulatory standards across all bereavement offerings
  • Contribute to the field through research, publication, and participation in professional conferences
  • Oversee graduate-level internship placements and provide clinical supervision as needed
  • Monitor trends and emerging practices in grief care to inform program development and innovation
  • Support marketing and communications efforts related to bereavement programming, including newsletters and event promotion

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Creative Arts Therapy, or a related clinical field
  • Active clinical licensure required (LCSW, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT)
  • At least 5 years of experience in grief counseling or bereavement services
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership or management role within a clinical setting
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage complex programs
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with budget development and strategic planning
  • Commitment to ethical practice and continuous professional growth
