About the Opportunity
Our client, a growing investment management platform, is seeking a Director of Insurance Accounting in New York City to oversee accounting operations for multiple insurance entities. This high-impact leadership role encompasses statutory reporting, technical accounting, regulatory compliance, team management, and frequent collaboration with senior leadership and the investment accounting team. The position covers a broad range of responsibilities and offers visibility as the firm continues to expand.
The annual base salary range is $175,000 to $225,000, with total compensation up to $300,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead insurance operations accounting, including premium and claims accounting, reinsurance, reserves, cash management, and treasury functions across multiple entities
- Ensure timely and accurate statutory financial reporting, filings, and compliance with all NAIC, state, and external regulatory requirements
- Serve as primary contact for external and regulatory audits, financial examinations, and disclosure requirements
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close, review reconciliations, and support consolidated financial reporting
- Supervise the preparation of audited financial statements and filings for rating agencies, regulatory agencies, and internal stakeholders
- Research, interpret, and implement Statutory Accounting Principles, advising on new standards and technical accounting issues
- Manage and develop a geographically dispersed accounting team, establishing goals, allocating resources, and supporting professional growth
- Oversee relationships with banks, custodians, and third-party administrators; support investment-related settlements and group-level reporting requirements
- Maintain and enhance internal control frameworks, collaborating closely with investment accounting and actuarial teams
- Support new product launches and transactions, providing accounting guidance and technical support
- Complete special projects and ad hoc reporting for management as needed
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA required
- Minimum 8 years of experience in the life insurance industry, ideally in a multi-entity or holding company environment
- Deep understanding of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and working knowledge of GAAP for life insurance and reinsurance entities
- Technical proficiency in insurance accounting systems, general ledger, and internal control environments
- Experience managing people, processes, and projects within complex organizations
- Ability to research new standards, reach technical conclusions, and communicate findings effectively
