About the Opportunity
Our client, a New York City-based e-commerce accessories company, is seeking a Director of Accounting to join their growing leadership team. Following the recent hiring of a new CEO and Head of Finance, the company is transforming its accounting function and implementing best practices. This individual will lead a team, drive process improvements, leverage technology to enhance efficiency, and collaborate with key stakeholders across the organization. This role is ideal for a CPA with inventory management experience from the retail or CPG space.
The annual base salary range is $150,000 to $215,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting functions, including general ledger, inventory, and payroll, while mentoring and guiding the accounting team to achieve professional growth
- Collaborate with the Controller and CFO to maintain financial accuracy and meet deadlines
- Review account reconciliations to ensure precision and proper documentation, continuously improving processes
- Contribute to the preparation of consolidated financial statements and management reports for leadership review
- Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring journal entries and reconciliations are accurate and completed promptly
- Identify opportunities for process enhancements to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Lead system upgrades and automation initiatives, working with IT to ensure scalability and alignment with company growth
- Partner with Operations, Legal, and Tax teams to provide accounting expertise on financial transactions and strategic projects
- Assist the Controller in advising senior leadership on financial strategies and operational improvements
- Ensure adherence to internal policies, controls, and SOX regulations
- Oversee annual audits, address findings, and regularly evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls
- Take ownership of special assignments and other tasks to align with company objectives and support the CFO and executive team
Job Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership positions within medium to large organizations
- Must hold an active CPA license
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline is required
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting standards, and internal control frameworks
- Expertise in accounting software such as SAP, Oracle, or NetSuite, along with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and mentor high-performing accounting teams
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, capable of collaborating across departments and translating financial concepts for non-financial stakeholders
