About the Opportunity
Our client, a well-funded and growing insurance company in New York City, is expanding its offerings with new annuities products and additional retail lines launching this year. They are in search of a Director of Accounting Policy to lead policy decisions, collaborate with the corporate development team on transactions, support the front office on new investment structures, and drive process implementation. This high-impact role offers direct exposure to senior leadership and strong opportunities for career growth. The role can be based in New York City or Connecticut. Candidates with life or reinsurance experience are encouraged to apply; policy experience is a plus.
The annual base salary range is $150,000 to $180,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.
Job Responsibilities
- Act as a key resource on multiple accounting frameworks, including US GAAP, US Statutory, Bermuda and Cayman Statutory, and Bermuda EBS
- Partner with corporate development and senior leadership to evaluate the financial reporting and capital impacts of strategic transactions
- Collaborate with the investment team and reinsurance partners to design and implement accounting approaches for innovative investment structures
- Monitor regulatory developments and evolving standards across jurisdictions, supporting timely and accurate financial reporting
- Continuously assess and enhance internal processes, accounting policies, and controls to align with business growth and transformation
- Lead cross-functional teams in adopting new regulatory updates, ensuring smooth implementation across finance, actuarial, and investment functions
- Oversee accounting policies for a broad spectrum of investment types and insurance products, including variable and fixed annuities, payout products, and universal life, across multiple accounting bases
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA or equivalent professional certification strongly preferred
- 8-15 years of experience in (re)insurance accounting, with a focus on life insurance or reinsurance
- 5+ years of hands-on accounting policy experience
- Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP and U.S. Statutory accounting standards
- Strong technical expertise in evaluating financial operations, complex reinsurance deals, and M&A activity
- Familiarity with block reinsurance transactions and/or legal entity acquisitions
- Understanding of insurance product design and related accounting, including variable and fixed indexed annuities, payout annuities, and universal life policies
- Exposure to a diverse mix of investment structures, such as alternative assets, hybrid securities, and loan-backed instruments
