Assistant Controller, REIT

About the Opportunity

Our client, a leading global alternative asset manager, is seeking an Assistant Controller to join their expanding Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) team in New York City. This role offers significant responsibility for SEC reporting, technical accounting, and the full reporting cycle, providing exposure to complex real estate transactions and collaboration across a high-performing finance team. The annual base salary range is $140,000 to $190,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead preparation and review of SEC filings, including quarterly/annual forms (10-Q, 10-K, 8-K) and related disclosures
  • Research and document complex technical accounting issues; prepare accounting memos and support transaction analysis
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and consolidations
  • Oversee coordination with external auditors for quarterly reviews and annual audits
  • Collaborate across accounting, tax, legal, investor relations, and other teams to deliver timely, accurate financial reporting
  • Review new transactions for U.S. GAAP compliance, including real estate and investment activity
  • Prepare variance analysis and management/board-level reporting packages
  • Enhance internal controls and reporting processes to support scalable finance operations
  • Support REIT compliance and reporting, working with advisors and in-house teams
  • Take ownership of special projects and key deliverables from inception through completion
  • Mentor junior finance staff and serve as a resource on technical accounting and reporting

 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA required (or actively pursuing)
  • Minimum 6 years of accounting experience, ideally with Big 4 public accounting background
  • Strong hands-on experience with SEC reporting (10-Q, 10-K)
  • Real estate accounting/REIT experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills, with ability to build models and analyze large datasets
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills
  • Demonstrated team orientation, proactive mindset, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
