About the Opportunity
Our client, a prominent and long-established real estate investment management platform, is seeking a Controller / Vice President to oversee accounting and reporting for a diversified, core open-end real estate fund in New York City. This high-impact leadership role manages a team responsible for property and fund-level controls, provides oversight on acquisitions, dispositions, and joint ventures, and partners closely with portfolio management, tax, and investor relations on special projects. The fund’s structure offers broad exposure to multiple property types and ownership models, as well as involvement with tax planning and investor-centric initiatives.
The annual base salary range is $165,000 to $185,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of accounting and reporting for direct real estate investments, complex joint ventures, and portfolio consolidations
- Manage and mentor assistant controllers and portfolio accountants, directing reviews of third-party manager accounts and property-level financials
- Review quarterly and annual close processes, consolidation, and financial reporting packages
- Oversee cash flow reporting, debt compliance, and loan covenant analysis for diversified asset classes
- Lead the preparation of audit deliverables and manage annual audits, financial statement coordination, and tax-related reporting
- Guide the accounting for acquisitions, dispositions, and new financings
- Support performance measurement, budget/forecast processes, and compliance with regulatory requirements in partnership with corporate accounting and data teams
- Engage directly with investors, responding to client inquiries and requests with a high degree of professionalism
- Collaborate closely with asset management, portfolio teams, and external partners (audit, tax, legal) on ongoing and ad hoc projects
- Identify opportunities for process improvement, technology adoption, and efficiency in reporting and operations
Job Requirements
- 10–15 years of experience in real estate fund or portfolio accounting/audit, with progressive leadership responsibilities
- Active CPA required
- Public accounting background required (Big 4 strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated experience managing teams and working in multi-entity environments
- Strong analytical and Excel/data management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Experience with MRI or Yardi is a plus; knowledge of Workiva or Anaplan a plus
- Exposure to REIT structures or private equity real estate environments preferred
