About the Opportunity:
The Safety Technician role involves the collection, segregation, and management of hazardous chemical wastes throughout Duke University and Duke University Hospital, including clinics and research laboratories. Secondary duties include handling hazardous pharmaceutical wastes, radiological, and universal wastes. This is a full-time contract position.
The estimated base pay for these positions are $19.80 to $23.40 per hour. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) are finalized at the time of offer.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct segregation and management of hazardous chemical wastes.
- Perform collection and management of hazardous pharmaceutical, radiological, and universal wastes.
- Comply with federal, state, and local regulations and standards by OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, RCRA.
- Communicate with supervisors regarding compliance policies and procedures.
- Operate Duke owned vehicles as part of job duties.
- Wear necessary protective equipment when working in potentially dangerous environments.
Job Requirements:
- Associates Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, or related field (Highly preferred).
- 1-3+ years of experience, primarily targeting newly certified candidates.
- Valid Driver's License with ability to operate Duke owned vehicle.
- DOT RCRA certification.
- Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to hazardous material management.
- Basic knowledge of chemistry and related sciences.
- Ability to utilize computer technology for data access and report generation.
- Functional oral and written communication skills.
