About the Opportunity
Our client, a prominent and expanding national financial institution, is seeking a Financial Policy Manager to join the technical accounting division within its asset management business. This high-impact leadership position is aimed at experienced technical accountants who want to play a hands-on role shaping accounting principles and practices that support innovative investment strategies and complex transactions across the enterprise. The individual in this role can sit in either New York City or Des Moines, IA.
The annual base salary range is $182,000 to $275,000. Actual compensation offered to the successful candidate may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, and/or skill level, among other things. Details about eligibility for bonus compensation (if applicable) will be finalized at the time of offer.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead in-depth accounting research, analysis, and policy development under US GAAP and US Statutory frameworks, especially on non-standard investment structures, financial instrument consolidation, asset transfers, and hedge accounting
- Draft technical accounting memoranda and position papers to substantiate conclusions and recommendations
- Advise asset management leadership and investment teams on appropriate accounting treatment for specialized vehicles, structured assets, and portfolio transactions
- Oversee technical guidance provided for alternatives, CLOs, and complex asset classes, ensuring accurate and compliant financial reporting
- Proactively track, interpret, and communicate the impact of evolving accounting standards, including those issued by NAIC, SVO, and FASB
- Lead implementation of new accounting pronouncements, including assessment of impact, operationalization, communication planning, and enhancement of internal controls
- Maintain and optimize SOX controls related to investment accounting policy
- Drive and participate in special projects demanding technical accounting expertise and collaboration across functional areas
Job Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of experience in technical accounting roles or in accounting advisory services
- Deep experience in financial services, with exposure to banking, capital markets, asset management, or insurance (insurance background preferred)
- Prior experience at a national office within a large public accounting firm is valued, but not mandatory
- Proven ability to independently research and resolve sophisticated accounting questions and clearly communicate outcomes to executives and colleagues
- Comprehensive knowledge of investments and financial instruments, with expertise in alternative investments, structured credit, securitizations, and consolidation
- Strong command of US GAAP required; familiarity with US Statutory accounting preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA credential strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional projects, and maintain rigorous standards in a SOX-compliant environment
